Symbolism in Mizoram Megaliths

Abstract (English)
Mizoram megaliths are lesser known but have intriguing nature. Art being an essential form of expression that can be executed on multiple mediums have been utilized on megalithic erections practiced by the early Mizo society. These megaliths with their various engraved figures when coupled with ethnography have shed light on their functions and utility playing an important role in the reconstruction of the past. Ideas, beliefs, and notions of the early Mizo society that were embedded in these megaliths can shed light on how the society functioned and organized itself. Apart from the meaning and significance that these megaliths have for whom it was erected, it also formed an important medium for looking into the symbolic aspect of the early belief system. This is where megaliths can have significant contribution in the reconstruction and understanding of the ideology of the early Mizo society.
