Abstract (English)

In this panel I will present the analysis derived from observations on the tensions that emerge around the installation of photovoltaic power stations, made during six weeks of ethnographic fieldwork in the Community of Madrid, Spain.
Throughout the research, three levels of conflict – the neighbourhood, the Autonomous Community and the international dimension – were identified, which are examined within the theoretical framework of Andrew Herod (2011), specifically based on his local, regional and global scales.
The analysis will explore how each scale presents contradictory notions of what a just energy transition means, short-circuits that contradict the understanding of one social sustainability for all. This will be elaborated not only by investigating how the various perspectives are interposed and related to each other but also will be further illustrated by the conflicts within each scale, which could be denominated as intrascale.
The multiple perspectives of energy communities found in different neighbourhoods not only substantiate a reconsideration of the meaning of social sustainability, but also of the relevance of an ethnography situated at multiple viewpoints in the debate.
Another fundamental aspect of the relevance of this research is the inherent importance of energy in the modern world and how the public policies and decisions about it, and who is taken into account when they are developed, are also influenced by the scale that it is considered the priority.

En este panel presentaré el análisis derivado de observaciones sobre las tensiones que emergen en torno a la instalación de plantas fotovoltaicas, realizadas durante seis semanas en un trabajo de campo etnográfico en la Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid, España.
A lo largo de la investigación, se identificaron tres niveles de conflicto - el barrio, la Comunidad Autónoma y la dimensión internacional -, los cuales son examinados sobre la base del marco teórico de Andrew Herod (2011), específicamente basándose en sus escalas local, regional y global.
La investigación explorará cómo cada escala presenta nociones contradictorias de una transición energética justa. Esta será elaborada no solo al analizar cómo las distintas perspectivas se interponen y se relacionan entre sí, sino que también será más profundamente ilustrada por los conflictos dentro de escala, los cuales podríamos denominar intraescalares.
Las múltiples perspectivas de las comunidad energéticas de distintos barrios no solo respaldan una reconsideración del significado de sostenibilidad social, sino que también de la relevancia de una etnografía multisituada, situada en múltiples puntos del debate.
Otro aspecto central para la relevancia de esta presentación es la importancia inherente de la energía en el mundo moderno y cómo las decisiones y políticas públicas sobre ella, y a quién se toma en cuenta al desarrollarlas, también son influenciadas por la escala considerada como prioridad.
