Abstract (English)

This paper explores the urban and social transformations of El Terreno, a historically diverse neighborhood in Palma de Mallorca, currently undergoing accelerated processes of gentrification. Using a methodological strategy that combines urban ethnography, semi-structured interviews, historical archive analysis, and participant observation, the research investigates how long-term residents, new inhabitants, and institutional actors negotiate and contest the experience of dwelling in a constantly changing environment.

The approach is situated at the intersection of urban anthropology, critical gentrification studies, and the sociology of space, allowing for a nuanced understanding of the housing strategies developed by different social groups in response to rising land values, residential tourism, and touristification. The study sheds light on tensions between belonging, memory, and access to space, while reflecting on the methodological challenges of analyzing such a dynamic phenomenon through multiple epistemological traditions. This interdisciplinary lens reveals the city not only as a site of material transformation, but also as a field of symbolic, political, and affective contestation.

Esta ponencia aborda las transformaciones urbanas y sociales del barrio de El Terreno, en Palma de Mallorca, un espacio históricamente diverso que hoy enfrenta procesos acelerados de gentrificación. A través de una estrategia metodológica que articula la etnografía urbana, entrevistas semiestructuradas, análisis de archivos históricos y observación participante, se investigan las formas en que residentes antiguos, nuevos habitantes y actores institucionales negocian y disputan el habitar en un entorno en constante mutación.
El enfoque se sitúa en la intersección entre antropología urbana, estudios críticos de la gentrificación y sociología del espacio, permitiendo una lectura densa de las estrategias habitacionales desarrolladas por distintos grupos sociales frente al encarecimiento del suelo, el turismo residencial y la turistificación. La investigación visibiliza las tensiones entre pertenencia, memoria y acceso al espacio, y reflexiona sobre los retos metodológicos de estudiar un fenómeno tan dinámico desde múltiples tradiciones epistemológicas. Se discute cómo esta aproximación interdisciplinaria permite comprender la ciudad no sólo como un espacio de transformación material, sino como un campo de disputas simbólicas, políticas y afectivas.
