Anthropological Insights into the Transmission of Knowledge within Large Scientific Infrastructures

Abstract (English)
This presentation examines the application of anthropological methodology, particularly ethnography, to the study of transdisciplinary knowledge transmission within particle accelerator-based Large Scientific Infrastructures (LSIs). Through global fieldwork, we investigate how these institutions foster collaborative knowledge exchange among international, multicultural, and multidisciplinary teams, thereby contributing to addressing societal challenges and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Drawing on case studies from LSIs in Asia (China, Thailand, Japan), Africa (South Africa), and Europe (Italy, Finland), as well as from international centers such as JINR (Russia) and CERN (Switzerland), we present an anthropological approach to studying multidisciplinary natural sciences in contexts where research spans basic science, industry-oriented applications, and projects with direct societal relevance. Using this approach, we analyze the mechanisms and processes through which knowledge and skills are transmitted across disciplinary boundaries within these complex scientific ecosystems. Particular attention is given to how collaborative environments shape the production, circulation, and application of expertise across diverse fields. In doing so, we aim to foster a critical discussion on the methodological contributions, potentials, and challenges of applying ethnography to the study of transdisciplinary research practices within Large Scientific Infrastructures.
