Symbolic Uses of Plants in Hindu Family Ceremonies

Abstract (English)
Some trees, twigs, bushes, leaves, and other plant materials have been closely intertwined with human life for millennia in South Asia. Mythology and ritual symbolism create and confirm powerful connections to birth, marriage, pregnancy, death, and ancestral ceremonies. This paper will review some ways that multiple castes of a South Indian community has used trees, plants, and plant materials to move through the life cycle and protect against spiritual dangers. Patterns in these cultural practices and possible explanations will be reviewed.
