Traditional Culture, Sustainable Living and Eco-Friendly Lifestyle in Postindustrial Society

Abstract (English)
In examining environmental practices to create sustainable living and eco-friendly lifestyle, I will focus on the role of traditional culture in this trend and social movement. Nowadays it is quite fashionable to live in the eco-style: to buy eco-products and eco-items, to form eco-habits and establish ecovillages. At the same time, the very concept of eco-living is very blurred. Some people associate it with safety, others with benefits for nature and humans or historical heritage. The environmental movement has not remained unchanged. It has evolved from the idea of protecting localized areas of unspoiled nature to protecting the whole of humanity's environment. It transformed from the idea of protecting nature 'from people' to the ideology of a mass social movement fighting for the preservation of human habitats. While at the beginning of the 20th century the idea of nature conservation was carried by a small scientific community and even individual naturalists and humanitarians, today nature and the 'culture of place' are protected by numerous national and global public organizations and government institutions. Environmental movements in each country have their own characteristic features, although there are some contours of a universal movement. The Russian environmental movement is relatively young compared to some other countries.
